The mountain village of Gargellen lies on the border of the Silvretta Alps, the beautiful mountain range in the south of the Vorarlberg province. Vorarlberg is the most western province in Austria with borders on to Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, making Gargellen an ideal base from which to explore Austria’s neighbouring countries. Gargellen is the highest ski resort in the Montafon valley, which boasts a total of 172km well-groomed pistes.

This small village has a reputation for having the best snow in the valley. It takes the prize for the largest ski resort in the area, even when compared to nearby Lech and St Anton. There are also a few restaurants in Gargellen itself, as well as bars and alpine huts, although Gargellen is a mostly quiet and picturesque town.

Gargellen is just under 2 hours drive away from both Zurich and Innsbruck airports. All of our ski property for sale in Gargellen is also accessible by train. They stop regularly in the nearby town of Schruns, about 25 minutes away.

 

Ski Scene

Gargellen is the highest winter sports region in the Montafon valley, with the ski slopes extending to an altitude of 2,300. It offers 34km of ideal family skiing – with 21km of blue slopes, 5km of red and 2km of black runs, as well as 6km of freeride pistes. This resort’s ski season lasts almost half the year, starting in December and lasting until the end of April. The mountain ranges offer easy and difficult slopes in a breathtaking alpine setting and perfectly fit for skiers, cross-country skiers as well as snowboarders. On top of this, the ‘Hochjoch Tale’ is the largest downhill ski run in the whole of Vorarlberg and the ‘Nike Snowpark Montafon’ is one of Europe’s best and largest snow parks.

The five best ski resorts in the valley are: Silvretta Montafon, Gargellen, Golm, Kristberg-Silbertal and Silvretta Bielerhöhe. These resorts offer 172km of well-groomed pistes, comprising of 97km of blue, 64km of red and 11km of black pistes.

 

Summer Fun

Gargellen is truly a year-round resort, with summer season activities including hiking, climbing, mountain biking, paragliding and more. There are also two 9 hole golf courses in Montafon, and three additional 18 hole courses in the neighbouring valleys. A large range of clubs operate in the area, many of which cater for young families. Highlights include a climbing experience for those wishing to scale the lofty summit of the Gargellner Kopfe and view the 360 degree panorama over the Silvretta, Ratikon and Arlberg mountain ranges.

Alternatively, a cable car is available from Gargellen up into the mountain range, where visitors can stop for lunch at the Schafberg Husli mountain restaurant. For those seeking an adrenaline rush, Vorarlberg is also home to the largest forest rope park, a perfect day out for families.
